Industrial Hygienist

Nicholas Long graduated with a B.S. in Environmental Health from Bowling Green University in August, 2007. While earning his degree, Nick’s intern experience included working for Honda of America Mfg., Allied Environmental Services and the Wood County Emergency Planning Department. At Honda, he conducted industrial hygiene monitoring to evaluate potential exposures to a variety of chemicals, noise and lead, performed department safety audits for OSHA compliance, and developed a safety management audit tool to determine compliance for lockout/tagout, fall protection, incident investigation and power industrial vehicles. At Allied Environmental Services Nick conducted environmental sampling for air, soil and water. He also coordinated worker health and safety programs and training programs. At Wood County, Nick was a Commodity Flow Study Coordinator, determining hazardous material flow and presenting results to the LEPC.
 
Since he has been with Safex, Nick has performed industrial hygiene assessments in multiple industries that include developing industrial hygiene sampling schemes, calibrating industrial hygiene equipment, conducting air and personal industrial hygiene monitoring, submitting samples to laboratories, and interpreting analytical data. Nick has also performed sound level mapping and personal noise dosimetry in various occupational environments. Nick currently provides staff support for a manufacturing facility where he conducts safety audits and industrial hygiene sampling.
 
Nick currently provides support for a large international chemical manufacturer, reviewing health and safety programs, developing industrial hygiene sampling schemes, conducting and coordinating industrial hygiene monitoring for chemical and physical exposures, making PPE and safety recommendations, leading the annual company wide carbon monoxide survey, completing chemical inventories, and working with the industrial hygiene database.
 
Nick has conducted indoor environmental air surveys to evaluate airborne bacteria and fungi for a large medical center, steel foundry, various commercial properties, municipal buildings, schools, and residential properties. Nick has also developed remediation workplans and conducted post remediation air surveys.
 
Nick has conducted training courses for the OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER, OSHA 8-hour HAZWOPER Refresher, OSHA 10-hour for general industry and construction, industrial hygiene monitoring, blood borne pathogens, ergonomics, respirator programs workshop, PPE selection, hazard communication, noise/hearing conservation, climate related injuries, and supports the training team for the Ohio BWC Respirator Fit Test Course. Nick is also certified to teach First Aid, CPR, and AED courses.
 
Nick has completed the 40-hour HAZWOPER, OSHA 10-hour for General Industry, Permit Required Confined Space course, OSHA Recordkeeping workshop, a 2.5 day Respirator Fit Test Course, Hearing Protection and Conservation Course, and has completed his 8 Hour Refresher for 2010. Nick is currently serving as the treasurer of the Central Ohio American Industrial Hygiene Association.
