Department of Transportation (DOT) (49 CFR 172.704)
Employees who handle hazardous materials before, during or immediately after transport must receive DOT training. This includes employees that:
  • Prepare hazardous materials for transport (includes labeling and paperwork);
  • Load and/or unload hazardous materials;
  • Select packaging for hazardous materials; or
  • Transport hazardous materials.
 This training must be provided within 90 days of employment and every three years thereafter.

Compliance Assessments
A DOT compliance assessment of your facility will prepare you for a DOT inspection.  It is important to review your hazardous materials management practices and identify areas that need improvement.

IATA Training  Requirements
According to IATA regulations, employees must be trained upon employment or change of job duites.  Refresher training is conducted every 2 years.

The primary goal of IATA is to ensure that dangerous goods are handled and transported safely.  Training requirements under the DGRs are designed to emphasize the proper ways to handle dangerous goods and communicate hazards of packages by marking, labeling, and documentation.
